About this Event
Our autumn residential this year will be at the SWT reserve of Carsegownan Moss (or possible Carstrammon Wood). Around four hours south-west of Edinburgh, Carsegowan Moss is one of the best examples of a lowland raised peat bog in Galloway. Cranberry and bog rosemary grow in the Sphagnum carpet and adders bask in the heather. Hen harriers, merlins, short-eared owls and barn owls can be seen occasionally hunting across the bog. Accommodation is provided by the client at a bunkhouse at the Loch Ken watersport centre. In previous years we have helped to remove birch scrub from the Carsegowan peat bog. We work for 2 full days, returning on the Sunday evening. The precise task(s) will be confirmed nearer the time, as we sometimes also work at the nearby Carstrammon Wood reserve.
Please note that spaces are limited to 10 and you must have attended a day task before booking for a residential. For this task you must book directly by ringing Debbie on 01313370223. You may wish to chat about what is involved with other volunteers who have previously participated.
We will provide greater detail about what you need to bring for the week, including boots and/or wellingtons, waterproof outdoor clothing, sleeping gear etc. Catering costs and cooking duties are shared equally.
