UNLV’s new African graduate students are invited to join us for a community-centered workshop led by Sumayya Jaeh Iliyasu. Currently a graduate student in English Literature, Iliyasu was previously the Creative Director of the Open Arts Development Foundation, a program designed to strengthen women’s creative writing and publishing in Northern Nigeria. The workshop was inspired by ”Carry On,” an artwork by the Korean American artist Jisoo Chung, currently on view at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art in Living Here. “Like Chung's ‘Carry On,’ this workshop explores what we carry both physically and emotionally when crossing borders and navigating new environments,“ Iliyasu explains.
Participants will create small paintings and drawings reflecting what they miss from home and what they hope for in their new chapter, followed by a symbolic planting ritual to represent growth and resilience.
Carry On: Story Exchange for African Students will take place at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art on Friday, November 14, from 3–5 p.m. The workshop is designed for graduate students who have recently moved from Africa to the United States to attend classes at UNLV. Attendance is free. All materials will be provided. Parking on the Maryland Parkway campus is free after 1 p.m. on Fridays. Carry On is produced in collaboration with Black Mountain Institute and UNLV’s African Student Alliance (AFA).
