About this Event
'The narrative I offer here is but one trajectory of life as I have known it. People sometimes talk about the lens through which a writer views the world that is being offered to a reader - in this case my principal lens is formed from the books I have read.' - Carmel Bird, Telltale
Carmel Bird is an Australian literary legend. Writer of fiction, non-fiction, and children's books, editor, teacher, and now memoirist, Carmel has been a vital presence in the Australian book scene for decades. 2016 saw her receive the Patrick White Award, which acknowledges writers who have made a significant contribution to Australian literature.
Telltale is the beautifully crafted story of a life lived through books, from a wartime Tasmanian childhood to the pandemic's "dramatic takeover of all life in Australia". We are invited into Carmel's home on Dja Dja Wurrung country as she turns the pages of her life in literature.
And now we invite you to Bookish as we launch this astonishing piece of writing. Please join us on Saturday July 16 to welcome Telltale onto our shelves and yours, as it becomes part of the world of books it so lovingly depicts.
'A book about books that dreams you through a library of life.' - Bruce Pascoe
'A rare thing, an ingenious memoir.' - Hilary McPhee
