The ArtsCenter is thrilled to present a performance by Carlota Santana’s Flamenco Vivo on Saturday, October 19th, at 7pm with a “meet and greet” afterwards with the artists. Our thanks go out to SouthArts and National Endowment for the Arts for the funding to present such world renowned artists. We recommend buying tickets in advance as this show may sell out in our new, intimate, 130 seat theater.The ArtsCenter has a tradition of hosting excellent world music and dance events and we hope to continue doing so in our new space at 400 Roberson Street in Carrboro. We felt flamenco was an ideal form to start with in honor of the Spanish speaking population of Orange County. It’s an art form that is popular worldwide yet represents the Romani people, wandering folks who have lived on the edge for centuries. Because of flamenco’s passionate expression of longing and loss, joy and defiance, and the gut wrenching experience of living; it is an art form that speaks to all of us.
Flamenco Vivo is one of America’s premiere flamenco companies. Their dancers and musicians represent some of the best talent available on the national stage. We hope you will take advantage of seeing them up close and staying afterwards to engage in conversation. Carlota Santana is the Artistic Director of Flamenco Vivo which celebrated 30 years of success last year. Their mission is “to promote flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic Heritage; produce and perform high quality dance works; provide arts education programs that catalyze connections among young people; and nurture the next generation of flamenco artists and educators.” The ArtsCenter is grateful for the generosity of spirit she brings to both the upcoming public performance and also the educational offering for our afterschool youth.
