About this Event

Cariwest — The History of Western Canada’s Largest Caribbean Arts Festival

IN CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH, please join us for a vibrant evening exploring Cariwest — Western Canada’s largest Caribbean Arts Festival — and its important place in Edmonton’s cultural history.

Founded in 1984 as part of Klondike Days, Cariwest has grown into a beloved annual celebration that showcases Caribbean music, dance, food, and traditions right in the heart of downtown Edmonton. Organized by the Western Carnival Development Association (WCDA), this volunteer-powered festival highlights the stories, contributions, and cultural richness of Caribbean immigrants in our region.

Our presenters will share:

• The history and evolution of Cariwest
• How the festival builds community and celebrates cultural diversity
• What goes into creating Edmonton’s official Caribbean Village each August
• The sights, sounds, and traditions that make Cariwest such a unique experience

From steel pan and soca to colourful costumes and community pride, Cariwest represents decades of cultural storytelling through celebration.

This presentation offers a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the history of one of Edmonton’s most dynamic festivals — and the people who bring it to life.
