Sports and New England are synonymous. They are part of our fabric, our identity, and our culture. Iconic images and experiences connect the region season and after season. 2024 was a wonderful year for the region’s sporting tradition as the Boston Celtics claimed their 18th world championship in basketball. Gabby Thomas, a Northampton, Massachusetts native and Harvard graduate, won Olympic 200m gold, and the US men’s artistic gymnastic team with Stephen Nedoroscik (Worcester, Massachusetts) and Frederick Richard (Stoughton, Massachusetts) won the bronze medal.
New England is home to some of the country’s best sports museums including the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, The Sports Museum, the Volleyball Hall of Fame, the Major Taylor Museum, The Sailing Museum & National Sailing Hall of Fame, and the Hall at Patriots Place. This workshop will explore sports collections and the inherent challenges of maintaining and preserving these unique items through presentations by collections specialists and conservators. Attendees will gain greater insight into the unique nature of sporting artifacts and how best to care for them long term.
The morning session will include a presentation from Nicole Markham, Curator of Collections at the International Tennis Hall of Fame who will discuss the Tennis Hall of Fame’s collection, the history of collecting, managing and preserving a collection that exceeds 30,000 items, environment and security concerns, storage, and exhibiting a wide variety of different materials. Additional topics to be included are how to write condition reports for sports-related collections as well as past projects that focused on preventive conservation.
The afternoon session will include three conservators from the greater Boston area who will share their experience assessing and conserving the many materials found in sports collections, including fabric, paper, leather, wood, plastic, and metal. Using study materials and images from past projects, each conservator will share their challenges, discoveries, and strategies working with these exciting and often richly historic artifacts.
Presented by the Conservators PAG & the Sports Community of Practice.
NOTICE FOR ATTENDEES: Out of consideration for the Major Taylor Museum, please do not bring any items from your collection.
