Cards & Cans Spades Tournament

As the cost of groceries increases, it makes it difficult for many families in our community to consistently get the necessary resources for food on a regular basis. The men of the Delta Xi Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc is working to combat that with our Spades Tournament Canned Food Drive. This event will bring together community members for a day of fun, competition, and giving. All food donations collected will benefit .

Accepted Food Donations

• Canned food products (especially fruits, meats & soups)

Ten items are required in order to compete in the tournament, but donations will also be accepted from spectators and the general public. 

Tournament Format

32 teams of 2 players each

Single elimination winners bracket 

• 1st place will go undefeated winning 5 matches straight

“Second chance” bracket (keep playing after your first loss)

• Lost once? We can't all be champions, but we can keep the fun going. Keep competing in this consolation round until you lose.

Game Rules/Variation (Joker, Joker, Ace)

Deck: 52 cards that include 2 Jokers (1 big, 1 small)

• 2♣ (club) and 2♦ (diamond) are removed

Card Ranking: Big Joker, Little Joker, A♠, K♠ ... 2♠, then other suits

Cannot lead spades until broken (played once) or only suit left

Scoring/Bidding

10 points per book that is bid

1 point per sandbag

• 100 point penalty/10 sandbags

Nil Bids allowed

• +50 if successful, -50 if failed

Blind Nil allowed only if team down 100+

• +100 if successful, -100 if failed

-50 points per renege

Awards & Door Prizes

• 1st place trophy given to the winning team
• Door Prizes given at the event
