Caravan Uyghur Cuisine Culinary and Cultural Pop-Up

The Uyghur NextGen Project in partnership with Welcome to Chinatown will be hosting a pop-up culinary and cultural event to support the relocation of Caravan Uyghur Cuisine, Manhattan's first Uyghur restaurant.

The event will include unique Uyghur dishes and the opportunity to learn about Uyghur culture. UNGP will also be hosting a raffle where guests can win prizes ranging from hand-made products produced by local Uyghur businesses to free boxing lessons from NYC's famous Gotham Gym.

Caravan Uyghur Cuisine was opened in July 2020 by Abdul Ahad Bakri. The original location was on Pearl Street, and was Manhattan’s first full-blown Uyghur restaurant.

Featuring classic Uyghur dishes such as savory lamb pilaf, handmade meat dumplings, cumin kebabs, and “big tray chicken,” Caravan Uyghur Cuisine’s offerings were a hit with their customers and have been featured in publications such as Eater and The Infatuation.

Despite the success and popularity among customers, the restaurant was forced to close in August 2022, after a landlord dispute that resulted in an eviction. Learn more in this petition and letter organized by regulars + fans of the restaurant.
