Caravan Uyghur Cuisine was opened in July 2020 by Abdul Ahad Bakri. The original location was on Pearl Street, and was Manhattan’s first full-blown Uyghur restaurant.

Featuring classic Uyghur dishes such as savory lamb pilaf, handmade meat dumplings, cumin kebabs, and “big tray chicken,” Caravan Uyghur Cuisine’s offerings were a hit with their customers and have been featured in publications such as Eater and The Infatuation.

Despite the success and popularity among customers, the restaurant was forced to close in August 2022, after a landlord dispute that resulted in an eviction. Learn more in this petition and letter organized by regulars + fans of the restaurant.

Welcome to Chinatown has launched a fundraising campaign to reopen Caravan Uyghur Cuisine at a new location in Chinatown. Challenges such as language and cultural barriers leave the business vulnerable. Despite this, the family is determined to continue cooking and sharing their cuisine. Caravan Uyghur Cuisine cuisine fits perfectly into the diverse fabric of Manhattan Chinatown.
