Kathy Armstrong is the July featured artist at Pittsford Fine Art. Moving to the Rochester area in late 2017 after a career as a graphic designer in Wisconsin and Colorado, she quickly realized the area has a lively art scene. She began painting with other artists en plein air, joining art organizations and entering shows. In 2020 she and 10 other artists founded Pittsford Fine Art, which has now grown to include 23 talented regional artists.Armstrong's watercolors cover a variety of subjects, but they have one thing in common — a quality of light. "I truly believe any subject matter can make an interesting painting with good light," says Armstrong. "It makes all the difference in whether you end up with a dull painting or one with vibrancy." She uses many transparent layers to build up her watercolors until she reaches the desired effect. Whether painting a sunlit sailboat, floral still life, or rusty mining machine, she loves bringing a painting to life from a plain white sheet of watercolor paper.
Armstrong is a signature member of the Philadelphia Water Color Society, Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society, and Rochester Art Club. She is also a member of the American Watercolor Society and paints outdoors with the Greater Rochester Plein Air Painters.
Armstrong enjoys teaching watercolor virtually as well as in-person at Pittsford's Spiegel Community Center. She will also be teaching a 3-day workshop at the Art Center of Yates County's Sunny Point location on Keuka Lake on August 19, 20, and 21.
