New York cellist Rufus Cappadocia explores sound through his self designed 5-String Cello, blending influences from collaborations with a broad spectrum of Haitian, African, Middle Eastern, Balkan, and Blues Musicians. Cappadocia’s music draws from a wide spectrum of cultural roots and tonal experimentation. Deeply influenced by ecstatic traditions and dance, his performances bring together traditional and modern elements, shaping a distinctive style and sound that speaks to his deep immersion in diverse musical worlds. Gari Hegedus (oud & bağlama saz) lives in the San Francisco area in California, where he performs with contemporary modal & music groups Teslim, Stellamara, and Janam. He has studied with oud master Naseer Shamma and has studied, recorded and performed with Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma. He has toured with the Mevlevi Dervish (Sufi) Order of America and continues to participate in Turkish ceremonial and devotional gatherings around the country. In addition to being a composer and performer, Gari is a talented luthier, repairing stringed instruments of every variety; coaxing sound from sazes, violins, rebabs, restoring lutes and lyras, making bows and finding ingenious ways to allow the true voice of an instrument to come forth.
Peter Jaques (clarinet, ney) hails from Memphis, Tennessee via Oakland, California. He was introduced to modal music via klezmer, and soon found his way to Greek, Turkish & Balkan traditions. He founded & directed the Brass Menažeri Balkan Brass Band for 12 years, and played with Stellamara and the experimental world-fusion trio Beats Antique. In 2013 moved to Crete to study at Labyrinth Music Workshop for a year. He currently performs with Hainides, composer Danai Moraiti, Chepkalo & Syndesis. — www.huzzam.com
