ANNIE JUMP AND THE LIBRARY OF HEAVEN Annie Jump is not your normal 13-year old. She’s starting high school a year early, her dad is obsessed with aliens, and an intergalactic super computer has manifested in the form of a teen-queen mean girl to tell her that she’s been chosen to lead humanity into the stars. The good news is she’s a science genius who’s already faced off against bullies, trolls, and the boy who maybe kinda likes her. The bad news is saving the world could mean giving up everything she’s ever known and the person she loves the most. Acclaimed playwright Reina Hardy (Changelings, Stars and Barmen, The Afterparty) returns to The VORTEX with her first National New Play Network Rolling World premiere, bringing her trademark brand of magic and humor to this coming-of-age adventure for everyone who’s ever looked up at the stars and dreamed. This remarkable play engages young adults and audiences of all ages, bringing science and imagination into the theatre.
SIX SQUARE Austin’s Black Cultural District (formerly known as Austin’s African American Cultural Heritage District) is the first black cultural district in the state of Texas and the only cultural arts district in the city of Austin. The organization was created in 2013 as an outgrowth of the City Council’s African American Quality of Life Initiative, which detailed widespread disparities, racial biases, and a decreasing Black population. Since inception, Six Square has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for African American residents through preservation of historic Black spaces, artistic cultivation, and by serving as a catalyst for social and economic development.
The VORTEX The VORTEX creates and presents new, innovative performances—world premiere plays, operas, musicals, ritual theatre, and devised collaborations. The VORTEX transgresses conventional theatrical forms with multidisciplinary performances from diverse traditions. Music, film, dance, opera, aerial arts, puppetry, and performance art contribute to our vibrant theatre. We are an artist-owned and operated theater and have produced over 350 productions. We are proud to have always engaged in non-traditional casting. The VORTEX has presented work by dozens of famous cutting-edge artists and is internationally renowned as a haven for alternative performance. Our work has received more than 100 major awards and hundreds of nominations for artistic excellence in production, design, acting, performance, directing, playwriting, choreography, and musical composition.
