Roger Corman’s The Pit and the Pendulum stars Vincent Price, Barbara Steele, and John Kerr in a film loosely inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s short story of the same name.In a screenplay by Richard Matheson, a young Englishman visits a foreboding castle in Spain to investigate his sister’s mysterious death.
A critical and box office hit, the film is one of what became a series of Poe adaptations from Corman, most starring Price. The film would influence Italian thrillers including Mario Bava’s The Whip and the Body (1963) to Dario Argento’s Deep Red (1975). Stephen King described one of the film’s major shocks as among the most important moments in post-1960 horror.
The Pit and the Pendulum is screening as part of our Capitol at 100 Centennial Celebration.
