About this Event
Toji 토지 returns in 2026, fully recharged to explore new voices in contemporary Korean literature. Following the steps of this unexpected heroine, we will delve into the realities of female factory workers in occupied Korea in this feminist historical novel balancing raw grit with unexpected tenderness.
In February, we invite you to discover the work of feminist Korean author Park Seolyeon through her fictionalised account of labour activist Kang Juryong's life: a fearless factory worker who finds the courage to carve out space for working-class women Korea's 1930s.
Spirited Kang Juryoung embarks on an arranged marriage to Jeonbin, an educated young man from a merchant family. Neither the newlyweds nor their families can suspect their bond will encourage Jeonbin to follow his dream of joining the Liberation Army in Manchuria, and will enable our unexpected heroine become an activist and union leader in 1930s Korea.
