ABOUT THE BAND: For 50 years, the Capital Area Concert Band has shared the joy of live music with people in the Springfield area. The band was founded in 1974 by Tom Ford, a teacher at Lanphier High School who saw the need for a group where anyone who played an instrument in their high school band could continue to play after graduating. A few founding members are still in the band, and members range in age from 20s to 80s. Some are professionals with extensive training, while others are rediscovering their talents after stepping away from music for many years. Hundreds of local musicians have been members over the years, donating their time to rehearse and perform throughout the community. Many of the group’s concerts are held in assisted living facilities, bringing live music to people who would otherwise be unable to experience it. The group is open to anyone who played an instrument in high school and wants to make music today. New members are always welcome, and there are no auditions or fees to participate.
