Cannon, Sail and Empire: The Great Age of European Exploration (1450-1790)

This set of 4 lectures examines the epic story of exploration of the world charted by Spain and Portugal and then later by England, France and Holland. We will be examining the technologies and the lives, insights and often tragic decisions made by people such as Vasco de Gama, Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, Francis Drake, and James Cook and many others. With them went the hopes and dreams of monarchs and average men, and their findings would dramatically and often tragically alter the lives of peoples from China to India to Latin America and beyond.
