Canning is a method of food preservation in which food is processed and sealed in an airtight container (i.e., Mason jars). Canning provides a shelf life that typically ranges from 1-5 years and studies have shown that canned fruits and vegetables are actually as rich in dietary fiber and vitamins (if not more so) than the fresh or frozen counterparts.
In this class, Chef Nico will teach you why food spoils and how to prevent it using the simple and age-old techniques of canning and pickling. He will take you through the basics of canning fresh vegetables to create three of your own, take home, creations. You will make some pickled beets, pickled peppers and pickled cucumbers (aka pickles!).
By the end of this class, you’ll have the skills necessary to extend the life of your favorite seasonal fruits and veggies to fill your pantry and fridge with your own edible creations and keep the bounty of seasonal harvests on your plate all year long!
