Make 2024 the year that you discover how great life can be with one of those special dogs; make it the year you earn your CGC. The CGC program not only enhances your dog’s behavior but also strengthens the bond between you and your furry companion!
The Canine Good Citizen Title was developed by AKC to reward mixed-breed and purebred dogs of all ages who have good manners at home and in the community. The purpose of the CGC Program is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it has been trained to be well-behaved in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs.
During this special class, an Instructor and Canine Good Citizen Evaluator will prep all participants on the skills and test all participants for their CGC title; participants will get a practice test. Passing students will then apply directly to the AKC to receive their certificate. Ribbons and appropriate paperwork will be awarded during the test day.
The 10 test items on the CGC test are practical, functional behaviors that every dog should have in order to be welcomed in the community.
The CGC test includes the following items:
Accepting a friendly stranger
Sitting politely for petting
Appearance and grooming
Sit and down on command and staying in place
Coming when called
Reaction to distraction
Supervised separation
Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
Walking through a crowd
Coming when called
Reaction to another dog
Reaction to distraction
For more specific details about the requirements to pass these test items, please see the test item quick reference guide, the CGC Participant Guide and watch a CGC test in action.
Handlers may not use food rewards but should talk to, praise and pet their dogs throughout the test to create a relaxed atmosphere. Harnesses or plain buckle collars with a 6ft leash are allowed, head halters, flexi leads and aversive equipment are prohibited. The CGC test is noncompetitive and dogs are not required to perform with the precision required in formal obedience.
