Annex Exhibition
Habitat Contemporary Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition featuring Rachel Black
Exhibition date: 07.05.24-08.16.24
With an opening reception 07.05.24 5-8 PM
Black’s exhibition Candy Coated Dreams explores abstract expressionism through the lens of vibrant colors, rough textures, and playful techniques.
Working with oil, acrylic, and spray paints combined with enamel, charcoal, pastels, crayons, and markers, traditional brushes are rarely used. Instead, the work is "sculpted" using scrapers, rollers, hands, and even applying paint straight from the tube. This tactile and intuitive approach creates dynamic compositions that burst with energy and emotion. Candy Coated Dreams invites viewers to immerse themselves in a world where color and texture converge, offering a playful yet profound exploration of abstract expressionism.
About:
With a B.F.A. in painting and ten years of corporate design stored in my professional tool chest, I now embrace the freedom and joy of autonomy in my career and creative journey.
As an insatiable traveler, my work has been influenced and shaped by the architecture, textiles, patterns and colors of Europe and Asia.
As an ever-evolving artist, I am inspired by the unconventional techniques and remarkable visions of Hans Hoffman, Willem de Kooning, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Working with oil, acrylic and spray paints combined with enamel, charcoal, pastels, crayons and markers, I rarely hold a brush, preferring to “sculpt” my work using scrapers, rollers, hands and even applying paint straight from the tube.
I invite you to delight in my visual playground. If you must seek meaning in my work, find it in the vibrant colors, rough textures and playful techniques. There you will find my happiness—and perhaps yours, too.
