This is the day when Mary and Joseph presented the Christ child to the ancient Simeon in the Temple, who acclaimed him as a “Light to lighten the gentiles”. This day, sacred to Christians everywhere, formally marks the end of the Christmas season. As the rigours of Lent are not far away, the Eucharist will be followed by a traditional Candlemas party with mulled wine and mince pies.
