This week we celebrate the birth of Christ Jesus. Forty days after Christmas the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ at the Temple celebrates the coming of the Light of the World. In the medieval English church this holy day was call Candlemas. In observance of this feast All Saints’ Church will hold a Candlemas Festival on Saturday, February 1, in conjunction with the City of Frederick’s Fire in Ice First Saturday Gallery Walk.
The historic church will be open for visitors starting at 11am and the Labyrinth in the Parish Hall will be open in the afternoon. An evening choral service at 5pm will begin with a candlelit procession. Inspired by medieval tradition there will be periodic blessings of candles during the day for people to use at home during the rest of the year. An ice sculpture of the All Saints’ spire located in front of the church will welcome visitors to our campus.
Chefs Dan, Bob, and Harry will preside over hot food sales for dine-in or take-away in the Great Hall from 11am-6:30pm.
Watch for more details next month on how All Saints’ interprets a traditional event for our times.
