Winter Words by Candlelight

Highly acclaimed British tenor Ruairi Bowen and prize-winning accompanist William Vann perform a concert centred around Benjamin Britten’s “Winter Words”. The cycle explores themes of memory transience and the passage of time often through vivid imagery of the natural world and human experience. The concert will also include works such as Finzi’s setting of metaphysical poet Thomas Traherne’s poetry “Dies Natalis” in a setting for piano and tenor.

Friday 14 February 2025 8pm

Purcell by Candlelight

Conductor and Cathedral Lay Vicar Edward Rimmer is joined by a consort of 8 professional singers as well as period instrumentalists to present a concert of works by perhaps our greatest ever composer; Henry Purcell. The concert will centre around Purcell’s output for the Church; music which is known for its expressive depth dramatic intensity and inventive use of harmony and counterpoint. The Cathedral’s brand new Klop Chamber Organ will feature in this concert so it is a good chance to see what it is capable of in an accompanying context.

Friday 14 March 2025 8pm

Piano by Candlelight

We are delighted to welcome back pianist David Owen Norris for an exciting programme of music with Salisbury connections. This will include works by Handel Mendelssohn Byrd as well as by David himself. David Owen Norris has been described as “Quite possibly the most interesting pianist in the world” and “A phenomenon at the keyboard” so this promises to be a wonderful evening of music.

Friday 2 May 2025 8pm

Wind Quintet by Candlelight

The final concert in our series will be of wind quintets given by the Mayflower Ensemble; a group established to promote and celebrate the performance of high quality chamber music from diverse genres. The concert will feature works by Mozart and Holst including in his 150th anniversary year Holst’s Quintet for wind and piano a piece marked by its lyrical folk-inspired melodies and rich harmonic language showing Holst’s early exploration of pastoral themes and his interest in English folk music.
