Speaker Bios

Sen. Nancy Skinner is an environmental trailblazer who has authored laws to accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles, expand rooftop solar, mandate clean energy storage, increase energy efficiency of buildings and appliances, and reform clean energy financing.

Her environmental achievements also include requiring all packaging in California to be recyclable or compostable by 2032; streamlining the creation of more housing near transit and jobs to reduce GHG emissions; jumpstarting the state’s use of green hydrogen; and maximizing nature’s ability to store climate-changing carbon in the soil, grasslands, wetlands, forests, and other natural systems.

Sen. Skinner is chair of the Senate Housing Committee and serves on the Senate’s Environmental Quality, Energy, and Budget committees. She began her public service in 1984 as the first student elected to the Berkeley City Council, and while on the council, she introduced the nation’s first Styrofoam ban. She is also past member of the East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors.

Sammy Roth is the climate columnist for the Los Angeles Times. He writes the twice-weekly Boiling Point newsletter and focuses on clean energy solutions. He previously reported for the Desert Sun and USA Today, where he covered renewable energy and public lands. He grew up in Westwood and would very much like to see the Dodgers win the World Series again.

Caroline Spears is the founder and executive director of Climate Cabinet — "Moneyball" for climate politics. Climate Cabinet targets state and local elections that provide the greatest “return on investment” on climate and helps strong candidates in those races win at the ballot box. Caroline has a B.S. and M.S. in atmosphere and energy engineering from Stanford University. She's been featured on NBC, Forbes' 30 Under 30 list, and Volts by David Roberts.

David Roberts, founder of the Volts newsletter and podcast, is a long-time writer and commentator on clean energy and politics. Previously, he covered climate change and clean energy for five years at Vox and 10 years at Grist. He lives in Seattle with his family, three dogs, and a cat.

Jeff St. John is director of news and special projects at Canary Media. He covers the intersection of technological, economic, and regulatory issues influencing the global transition to low-carbon energy in the electricity, transportation, and building sectors. He is the former managing editor and senior grid-edge editor of Greentech Media, and he previously reported for The Fresno Bee, the Tri-City Herald and the Anchorage Daily News. His areas of expertise include renewable energy, smart grid, distributed energy resources, energy storage, demand response, and electric vehicles. Jeff earned a master’s degree from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism in 2001. He lives in Oakland with his wife Tara and his dog Lily, and enjoys hiking, gardening, and playing guitar with his nieces and nephews.
