The Canadian Museum of Immigration is proud to present Canada's Storytellers: Dr. Melissa Karmen Lee in partnership with the Chinese Canadian Museum.

Dr. Melissa Karmen Lee, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chinese Canadian Museum will join us on-site at to present Telling Cultural Histories: In Our Own Voices. This dynamic presentation will introduce the Chinese Canadian Museum, the first cultural institution in Canada devoted to Chinese Canadian culture and lived histories, based in Vancouver, Canada. Lee will discuss and introduce the different exhibitions within the museum including 'The Paper Trail', an inaugural exhibition on the Chinese Exclusion Act 1923-1947 in Canada and the generational trauma that resulted in the separation of Chinese Canadian families in the 20th century.

About the speaker: Dr. Melissa Karmen Lee is an arts and culture leader with research interests in public art and social practice. She currently holds the appointment of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the Chinese Canadian Museum, in British Columbia, Vancouver which was successfully opened on July 1st, 2023, showcasing 3 inaugural exhibitions in a 27,000 square foot space in the heart of Vancouver Chinatown. From 2019-2022, she was the Director of Education and Public Programs at the Vancouver Art Gallery. From 2016-2019 she was on the founding team to open Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Art, Hong Kong serving as the Education and Public Programs Curator. From 2008-2015, she was Senior Lecturer in the English Department of Chinese University of Hong Kong. She holds degrees from McGill, Canterbury, and Lancaster Universities.

Melissa Karmen Lee, présidente-directrice générale (PDG) du Chinese Canadian Museum, nous rejoindra sur place pour présenter « Telling Cultural Histories: In Our Own Voices » (Raconter des histoires culturelles : De nos propres voix). Cette présentation dynamique servira d’introduction au Chinese Canadian Museum, la première institution culturelle au Canada consacrée à la culture et à l’histoire vécue des Canadiens d’origine chinoise, basée à Vancouver, au Canada. Lee discutera et présentera les différentes expositions du musée, notamment « The Paper Trail » (Les traces de papier), une exposition inaugurale sur la loi d’exclusion des Chinois de 1923-1947 au Canada et le traumatisme générationnel qui a entraîné la séparation des familles sino-canadiennes au 20e siècle.


À propos de la conférencière : Melissa Karmen Lee est une spécialiste des arts et de la culture qui s’intéresse à l’art public et à la pratique sociale. Elle occupe actuellement le poste de directrice générale du Chinese Canadian Museum, à Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique, qui a ouvert ses portes avec succès le 1er juillet 2023, présentant trois expositions inaugurales dans un espace de 27 000 pieds carrés au cœur du quartier chinois de Vancouver. De 2019 à 2022, elle a été directrice de l’éducation et des programmes publics à la Vancouver Art Gallery. De 2016 à 2019, elle a fait partie de l’équipe fondatrice du Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Art, à Hong Kong, en tant que conservatrice de l’éducation et des programmes publics. De 2008 à 2015, elle a été maître de conférences à la faculté d’anglais de l’université chinoise de Hong Kong. Elle est diplômée des universités de McGill, Canterbury et Lancaster.
