Holding Space: The therapeutic role of art as a transitional object
Host: Tonyneta Dowden
Info: Transitional objects, rooted in the early mother-baby relationship, help bridge the gap between dependence and independence. In infancy, they offer comfort and symbolize the caregiver’s presence during separation. In art therapy, creative materials or artworks can serve a similar function—providing emotional continuity and safety both inside and outside the therapy space. I will be discussing how these objects support therapeutic connection and emotional resilience.

Info: In these two sessions, we will explore the fundamental elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, pace and tempo—and how they are used intentionally in Music Therapy to foster connection and promote emotional catharsis. A particular focus will be given to the practices of mirroring and matching in music-making, and how these techniques support therapeutic attunement. We will delve into how these techniques can support client’s to feel seen, heard, and validated.
