Calyces are the sepals that form a protective layer around a flower in bud. It is also the name of an Athenian 4 piece prog rock/heavy metal act built around Manthos Stergiou, guitarist and main songwriter in the acknowledged prog metal band Tardive Dyskinesia that left a deep mark in the local scene and made a sensation to underground circuit. In its over-a-decade course, Manthos has curated, produced, recorded and performed live the 4 full length albums they released to international critical acclaim. In this new outfit, he assumed guitar and vocal duties and he is being accompanied by Stavros Rigos (ex Tardive
Dyskinesia / Poem), Giannis Golfis (Revenge Of The Giant Face) and Loukas Giannakitsas (Grandmaster Cockroach).
"Impulse to Soar” (released on October 16, 2020) blends prog metal in the way it was shaped through the 00’s, with the finest elements of classic progressive rock from the 70’s, bridging the most important areas of the thinking man’s music. In their running time these 10 tracks feature sweeping low tuning heavy riffs with a barrage of polyrhythmic parties, alternated with atmospheric passages emphasizing on groove, melody and energy through the lens of an accurate songwriting. It was mastered by Grammy award-winning engineer, Alan Douches (Mastodon, Kvelertak, The Dillinger Escape Plan etc.) and features guest appearance by Jørgen Munkeby (Shining) with a saxophone solo on “Unfair Labour”.
Calyces have already made a name for themselves on the live circuit, having performed as a supporting act for prominent bands such as Tesseract, Cult of Luna. Additionally, they completed a mini-tour with the band Need, further solidifying their reputation as a dynamic live act.
In 2023, the band announced the return of drummer Stavros Rigos (ex Poem), marking a reunion of long-time collaborators. Stavros and Manthos previously worked together in Tardive Dyskinesia, where they composed and extensively toured for the band’s first two albums, "Distorting Point of View" (2006) and "The Sea of See Through Skins" (2008). The chemistry between them remains strong, as they channel their collective energy into creating the next phase of Calyces’ journey.
As of 2024, Calyces have completed the recording of their second full-length album, which is set to be released in early 2025. The band’s DNA is deeply intertwined with live performances, and their goal moving forward is to bring their music to as many people as possible. By embarking on steady tour cycles, they aim to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with on stage, where they truly belong.
