About this Event
Join us for a meal and screening of CALLS FROM HOME (31min) followed by a panel discussion on Building Community Not Prisons (BCNP), a national coalition currently fighting the proposed half-billion dollar construction of a new 1,400-bed federal Pr*son in Letcher County, Kentucky, slated for a former mountaintop removal coal mining site.
If built, the construction of this proposed federal Pr*son will have national consequences that reach far beyond Letcher County. The Bureau of Prisons’ frequently incarcerates people 500 miles from home, or more - separating families and making it extremely difficult for loved ones to stay connected.
Following the screening, local community members will discuss this potential Pr*son and how we can invest in communities - not cages!
About the film: A longstanding radio program sends familial messages of love to people incarcerated in Central Appalachia. Directed by Sylvia Ryerson, a former DJ for the show, Calls From Home follows the weekly broadcast through Pr*son walls, portraying the many forms of distance that rural Pr*son building creates—and the ceaseless work to end the racist system of mass incarceration and family separation.
This event is free & includes dinner! This screening is hosted by LEX V (Lived Experience Voices), NHC NAACP, Working Films, and the Building Community Not Prisons coalition.
