About this Event

Join us for a neighborhood green loop bird walk led by local Detroit birder, Kyle Schanta . We will meet at the front of Callahan Park (3356 E Ferry St Detroit) and then walk part of the East Ferry Warren Green Loop looking for migratory birds.

Callahan Park is the first Detroit Bird City park, it was restored with a native grass and flower meadow in 2019. The East Ferry Warren Green Loop is a path through several green space projects in the East Poletown neighborhood of Detroit. Along the loop we plan to visit a couple Arboretum Detroit sites including Oxygen Alley, and Treetroit 1. We will walk through these spaces looking and listening for birds. For each bird we find we can discuss behavior, field marks, fun facts and identification tips. If there is not much bird activity we can discuss past bird sightings in the area as well as the local plants and how they interact with birds and other wildlife.

Kyle has been watching the birds at Callahan Park since 2020 as the Detroit Bird City meadow was first established. Thanks to all of Kyle's work we have been able to record over 100 different species of birds at Callahan Park, which you can view .

We will provide binoculars for anyone who would like to borrow them.

Please note there is no restroom available.

If you have any questions, or arrive late and need to find the group, please call Ava at 313-800-1578.
