The Insurance Diversity Initiative (Initiative) is a priority program under the leadership of California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. Since 2011, the mission of the Initiative is to create inclusive opportunities for diverse business enterprises and leaders to advance supplier and board diversity within California’s insurance industry.
About the Summit: The annual Insurance Diversity Summit is a free, in-person event that brings together diverse leaders of businesses owned by women, LGBTQ+, veterans, disabled veterans, people with disabilities, and historically underrepresented communities and insurance industry stakeholders & representatives for a networking and engagement opportunity. The Summit includes sessions focused on capacity-building for diverse suppliers, the latest insights on board diversity, and we will also unveil the latest key findings from the 2024 California Insurance Diversity Survey that sheds light on the state of board and supplier diversity among 300+ insurance companies that individually collect upwards of $75 million dollars in California premiums.
The theme for the 2024 Summit is: ‘Harnessing our Impact’ to spotlight leaders who have created tangible impact on advancing the economic inclusion of historically underrepresented consumers, and achieved success in creating & sustaining a company culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion for their employees, communities, consumers they serve.
The Summit is in-person and open to the public, and we expect up to 500 attendees to join us. The primary attendees include:
o Leaders of businesses owned by women, LGBTQ+, veterans, disabled veterans, people with disabilities, Asian-American & Pacific Islander, Latino/a/x, Black, African American, Native American, and other underrepresented communities.
o Leaders and executives of insurance companies
o Community leaders from diverse certification agencies and chambers of commerce (i.e. Western Regional Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), California LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, National Women’s Business Enterprise Council, California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Los Angeles Metro Chamber of Commerce, Los Angeles LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, etc.)
o Nation-wide insurance regulators as part of the Special Executive Committee on Race & Insurance – National Association of Insurance Commissioners
o Leaders and members of the California Statewide Coalition on Diversity Initiatives, comprising CA state agencies committed to advancing procurement opportunities and supplier diversity, including: California Department of General Services (DGS), California Department of Transportation (CalTrans), California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), California Department of Healthcare Access & Information (HCAI), and California Office of the Small Business Advocate (CalOSBA)
