Since 1972, Jim Heimann has maintained a graphic design and illustration studio in Los Angeles. He has been a lifelong collector of historic paper. Initially he experimented with collage-based illustrations with materials he found scouring flea markets on the weekend in search of graphic inspiration. In 1980, his book publishing career kicked off with California Crazy: Roadside Vernacular Architecture. A mid-career shift on 2000 found him in a new position as executive editor of Taschen America. Since then, he has art directed, edited, designed, or authored over 50 books. His ephemera collection has evolved into an archive of many thousands of rare artifacts and historical documents.
