Shone Thistle is an author, poet and multidisciplinary artist. Their work spans radio to jazz ensemble, festival to conference keynote, inner city cabaret to gallery by the sea. In the sport of poetry, they’ve received perfect scores at the world-famous Nuyorican Poets Café
Shone’s writing can be found in several anthologies, including Mic Check: An Anthology of Canadian Spoken Word Poetry, and YYC POP: Poetic Portraits of the People. They were recently the Artist in Residence for Camp fYrefly, a summer camp for Queer youth right here in Southern Alberta.
Shone proudly serves as Calgary’s 7th Poet Laureate and is also the Executive Director of Calgary Queer Arts Society. They have a children's book in the process of being published, and a collaborative spoken word and storytelling project being launched next year titled "The Stories We Tell Ourselves." 📋 Sign Up System 📋
Due to the overwhelming response in people looking to share their poetry we have devised a new system in hopes of hearing all your voices.
No more lining up at 6:30pm to sign up! Doors will still open at 6:30pm. But sign up will be announced on mic on the stage at 7pm. Poets will come to the stage to sign up for either the open mic or the slam. You can only sign up for one or the other not both. There will be no cut off. All that want to sign up can. All names who want to do open mic will be put in a jug. 5 names will be pulled. Those 5 names will be our open mic poets. All the people who want to slam be put in a different jug. 12 names will be pulled from the jug. Those 12 people will enter the slam.
For all the people who's names DID NOT get pulled. Your names will be added twice to the following months slam.
Want to come watch and not perform? That's totally okay!
🎤Slam rules🎤
->Bring 3 poems, each 3 minutes or less. Depending on the number of slammers, the format of the slam will either be round robin, or 3 round elimination. The format of the slam will be decided on the night of by the Slam Master, and any adjustments to that format is at the discretion of the Slam Master.
->You do NOT have to have your poems memorized, and you may read from your phone or paper.
->Poems are scored by randomly selected audience members.
->No musical instruments, props or animals acts are allowed.
