The Cal Poly Jazz Combos Winter Showcase is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in the Pavilion of the Performing Arts Center. There are four jazz combos: the Contemporary Combo, Composer/Arranger Combo, Latin Combo and Jazz Standards Combo. The small ensembles, of about eight students each, explore a wide spectrum of jazz performance, from modern and traditional styles to original compositions and arrangements, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian–influenced repertory, and classic standards.
The focus of the groups is strong ensemble interaction, stylistic authenticity, creative expression, and the development of each musician’s individual voice within the jazz tradition. The students represent majors from all across campus.
Dylan Johnson directs the jazz combos.
Tickets to the concert are $22 for the public, and $12 for students and San Luis Obispo Jazz Federation members. Event parking is sponsored by the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).
Patrons receive a 20% discount when buying season tickets to four Music Department events through the Performing Arts Ticket Office; Cal Poly faculty and staff receive a 20% discount on individual tickets.
The event is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program.
