About this Event

The Cal Poly Alumni - Washington DC Community is excited to bring WOW back to DC after a two-year hiatus!

The annual Weekend of Washington (WOW) is a great way for new and existing DC residents to get to know the community through fun and familiar events around the city. Build your weekend by selecting from the activities listed below. Note: You will need to register for each event you plan to participate in.

Thursday Monthly Happy Hour: Our monthly happy hour will be the unofficial kick-off to WOW in DC. Wind down from the week and meet your WOW leaders (the Cal Poly Alumni - Washington DC Community Leadership Team). Happy hours are always on the first Thursday of the month and rotate around the city.

  • Thursday, Oct. 6
  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. EDT
  • The Brig in Navy Yard (1007 8th St SE, Washington, DC 20003)
  • 21+ alumni, friends and family welcome
  • Free; food and beverages available for purchase

Saturday Hike and Optional Breakfast: We are going exploring! Hiking was such a big part of our lives in San Luis Obispo, and while we can't make it to Bishop Peak, we are going to explore Rock Creek Park. We will start at the Nature Center (there's parking!) for the 3.5-mile Boulder Bridge loop trail. Learn more about the hike, including accessibility information, by clicking here. Afterwards, feel free to join the group at Little Red Fox for coffee and breakfast.

  • Saturday, Oct. 8
  • 10 a.m.-1 p.m. EDT
  • Hike: Rock Creek Park Nature Center (5200 Glover Rd NW, Washington, DC 20015)
  • Breakfast: Little Red Fox (5035 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008)
  • Family-friendly (including children)
  • Free; food and beverages available for purchase during optional breakfast

Saturday Evening Pub Crawl: If you've been feeling a bit nostalgic for the small-town college bar scene — we have something for you! Who could forget the signature drinks and staples of downtown San Luis Obispo – a Guinness race at Frog & Peach, stop light at The Library, dancing at Mother's Tavern...maybe a bull sweat at Bull's Tavern? We'll try to recreate a little bit of the magic here in DC with a tour of unique pubs, restaurants and bars.

  • Saturday, Oct. 8
  • Begins at 8 p.m. EDT
  • Starting location TBD (registered attendees will receive more information as the date approaches)
  • 21+ alumni, friends and family welcome
  • Free; beverages available for purchase

Sunday Farmers' Market: Who misses Thursday night Farmers' Market? On Sunday morning, we're headed to one of the few historic public market buildings left in Washington, DC and the only one that has retained its original public market function — Eastern Market. The building is designated as a National Historic Landmark and has been in continuous operation since 1873.

  • Sunday, Oct. 9
  • 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. EDT
  • Eastern Market (225 7th St SE, Washington, DC 20003)
  • Family-friendly (including children)
  • Free; learn more about Eastern Market HERE

Sunday Afternoon BBQ: Cal Poly alumni Bob (Engineering Technology, '88) and Wendy Wimmer (Applied Art and Design, '88) are graciously opening their home to us for a barbecue! It will be an afternoon of food, drink and memories as we join together to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. *Accessibility note: There are a few steps leading up to the Wimmer's home. Parking is available on the street.

  • Sunday, Oct. 9
  • 1-4 p.m. EDT
  • Wimmer Home (Gaithersburg, MD); instructions on transportation and location will be sent to registered guests
  • Alumni and family welcome
  • $10 early bird (until September 22); $15 general registration (after September 22)

Please RSVP for all events no later than Sunday, Oct. 2.
