Cal Murphy is a singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his unique brand of acoustic folk-punk and often tongue-in-cheek style. His live shows feature an eclectic mix of original material, sing-along covers, and a fair few surprises.Cal draws on his Irish and English roots to combine folk with punk and rock influences, striking a balance between storytelling, comedy, satire, and the grittier side of everyday life. Funny, moving, and just plain fun, prepare to laugh, cry, and have a bit of craic as Cal Murphy comes to the Grayston Unity!
Born and raised among the Pennines in Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire as part of an Irish family, Cal first started playing music as a teenager in Manchester's rock scene. As time went on, he began playing solo with just an acoustic guitar, taking influence from the folk traditions of Ireland and Britain.
He released his first album "So This Is Life" in 2018, featuring fan-favourite comedy song "Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time", the heartfelt track "Holes", and the satirical "Little Fat Kid" - poking fun at a certain president...
Over the next few years, Cal released several EPs of original comedy songs and traditional folk songs.
Cal finished 2023 with the release of his 2nd full-length album "One More Glass of Whiskey".
A collection of more serious songs, it deals with police corruption and brutality (One More Glass of Whiskey), mental health (Rope), and knife crime (Slipping Away), as well as lighter topics like getting older (The 27 Club) and why acoustic music is the absolute worst (The Sad Truth About What I Decided to Do With My Life).
Through 2024, Cal continues to tour in support of the album. Check out the videos from the singles on YouTube!
