About this Event

In collaboration with Copenhagen Architecture Festival and Architecture Without Borders, join us for an evening of film screenings focused on migration and place. Across three short films, we’ll explore ideas of displacement and sanctuary, protection of space, and preservation of culture and identity.

18 minutes — directed by Alistair Debling (United Kingdom)

Shot on iPhone, 16mm film and a Mavic drone, Coastguards surveys 10 miles of English coastline across 500 years, revealing a delicate ecology shaped by impacting waves of architecture, migration and militarisation. As changing climates disrupt migratory patterns along the English Channel, categories of native and invasive are thrown into question: when new arrivals land, who is deemed a threat and who is offered sanctuary?

15 minutes — directed by Ayham Dalal and Kamil Bembnista (Jordan)

In 2015, Berlin received thousands of refugees overnight. To accommodate them, new types of refugee camps called Tempohomes were constructed, and new typologies of shelter were designed. Within these camps, how did refugees navigate the meanings of home, and how did the camp managers respond to refugees’ appropriations? In this short documentary, the notion of the refugee camp as a space of care and control is explored, asking: how can architecture empower people to express their culture, background and identities in camps and beyond?

10 minutes — directed by Farhad Pakdel (Canada)

The Face of a City reflects on Farhad Pakdel’s experience as an immigrant, exploring immigration as an existential experience that splits an immigrant’s life in two, requiring them to redefine themselves in the new milieu. In particular, Pakdel focuses on the significance of the place and how it transcends a physical entity, spotlighting people’s memories of places and cities, but also how cities hold our memories and register our traces. The Face of a City is also a homage to Tehran, the city where Pakdel was born and grew up.

About CAFx + SPACE10: Sense of Place

What creates a place depends on countless factors, both tangible and intangible: from the aesthetic effects of bricks, to the individual and collective memories embedded in city walls. From feelings of home in the house and neighbourhood, to the ideological discourses that influence the community, nation, and planet.

With this year’s theme Sense of Place, Copenhagen Architecture Festival explores the transition where physical space becomes ‘place’ and the built becomes more than mere construction.

Set alongside our exhibition The Ideal City 2040 in SPACE10 Gallery, our joint CAFx + SPACE10 program shares films and dialogues exploring the complex relationships between spatial structures and experiences, feelings of home, and manifestations of place amid movement and migration.
