About this Event
After walking away from the conservatory, pianist James Carson backpacked overland from Spain to Japan. At the center of his story is an unusual off-grid cabin in the Canadian wilderness, which he ends up designing and building by hand upon his return. It is here, away from everything, that he found a new and emerging form of music.
Join us for a film about his experience, accompanied by a live performance featuring some of the music that emerged.

Cabin Music is pianist and filmmaker James Carson’s two-decade effort to transform the way in which music is created. Drawing on his years building and practicing in an isolated strawbale cabin, Carson's performances remove his own intentions by receiving and channeling all forces and energies within and beyond the performance space. His award-winning feature documentary debut, Cabin Music, initiates audiences into the project’s global origins. The results generate profound experiences hailed as “meditative” (Time Out New York), “shimmering” (Feast of Music), “intensely beautiful” (Mystery Catalog), and “sublime” (The Independent Critic), that transport audiences “to the stratosphere” (Berkshire Fine Arts), through “delicate music surrounded by the aura of silence” (Boston Phoenix).
“A lyrical, genre-defying feast for the senses, Cabin Music is a testament to the twin transcendent powers of music and nature.” - DOC NYC
