Unintended Consequences: Sunken Settlements of Lake St. Clair
Presented by Daniel F. Harrison, PhD, Wayne State University Department of Anthropology
In the early 19th century, two communities arose on the Michigan shore of Lake St.Clair: the Catholic church of St. Felicity, and the Village of Belvidere. Within a few decades, both had succumbed to rising waters. Were the causes natural, or man-made? What can the past tell us about the future? The investigation combines history, archaeology, and climatology, with an environmental message.
