Cabaret Belly Dance Basics – Tamara KnappenbergerThis four-week session embraces the power of storytelling through the exquisitely controlled movements and graceful step combinations of Cabaret Belly Dance. Learn basic movements drawing from a history of Egyptian, Turkish, Greek, Lebanese, Moroccan, and American performance dance forms and music. We will embrace the magnificent abilities of the feminine form, developing isolated muscle control, improving balance and strength, mastering stage presence, and learning to use the energy within our bodies to captivate and communicate our stories. Above all else, we enjoy our bodies and have fun moving together. Each class will start with a long warm-up to and followed by basic isolations, steps, and shimmies that we will build upon each week to combine into a short dance routine. Dancers ages 13+ of all ability and experience, are welcome.
Dancer’s Bag – The Basics
*Comfortable, stretchy clothing that allows free movement of all body parts.
* We dance barefoot, but ballet slippers or suede soled dance shoes work as well. No socks please.
* Water bottle!
* * Please note that it is best to eat a healthy light snack before class. You will need energy but will regret dancing with a full stomach.
Additional Options:
* Any scarf, belt, shawl or combination that sits low on your hips. Fringe, dangles, and coins are helpful for feeling rhythm and movement. I will have a few loaners available.
* Bangle bracelets – anything from your costume jewelry box that makes you smile and slides along your arms.
* Baubles – necklaces, rings, earrings, anklets, any other jewelry that brings you joy and power. These help us connect with our bodies and our movements.
* A skirt that can twirl and allows you to move. Skirts are dance partners. I have a few loaners.
* Yoga mat – optional for cool down
