PURPOSE
Chicagoland Area Alternative Education League (CAAEL) exists to create interscholastic activities missing from alternative education schools
VISION
We envision a world where students with unique needs outside the typical education system lead positive and fulfilling lives
MISSION
Our mission is to empower students and teachers in alternative schools by integrating athletic and academic programs into the school day, fostering personal growth and responsibility
THEORY OF CHANGE
CAAEL is a partner to alternative schools.
We create valuable opportunities for interscholastic activities- otherwise missing from their schools.
Students want to participate. They are rewarded for their academic efforts, attendance, and behavior by competing, playing, and having fun.
At CAAEL, we prioritize high-quality training, customized support, and a wide variety of student-centered programs based on our guiding principles.
When educators incorporate CAAEL into their schools, everybody wins.
CAAEL (Chicagoland Area Alternative Education League) is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that has been providing a full spectrum of academic, athletic and art programs to special education/at-risk youth since 1976.
CAAEL partners with over 60 alternative schools and serves students from 30 IL counties. CAAEL serves about 5,000 students per year.
Research shows that students who participate in athletic or other activity programs achieve higher grade point averages, miss fewer days of school, and are more self-confident.
Through wonderful organizations such as the IHSA, hundreds of thousands of Illinois students represent their schools in athletic and activity programs ranging from basketball to debate.
The problem has always been limited access for at-risk youth. Each year, thousands of Illinois’ at-risk students are excluded from the educational mainstream and unable to participate in these life-enhancing athletic and activity programs. These alternative education students, ages 7-21, may be
• Aggressive or withdrawn
• Emotionally disturbed or learning disabled
• Behaviorally challenging or socially isolated
• Gang involved and/or drug dependent
• Depressed and/or truant
CAAEL sponsors over 1100 events annually to address this serious gap… events that emphasize sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal responsibility instead of winning and losing. All CAAEL activities take place during school hours where students must be eligible each week based on academics, attendance, and behavior.
