One of the biggest challenges for any individual, leader, team, or family, is learning how to be both productive in what we do AND present in all our relationships. We need to get our work done and do it well, but people are not machines. Making time for the significant relationships in our lives is important because they play a key role in satisfying our sense of fulfillment and value, in helping us recharge, and also in helping us strategically develop influence and rapport with the people in our lives.
The 5 Gears is a simple tool that will help us achieve this balance effectively. Like a stick shift on a car, the 5 Gears helps us understand how to get into the right Gear at the right time, and communicate that to those around us. When and how do we create the time and focus needed to do our work well? When and how do we focus on the relationships that recharge and rejuvenate us? Learning to schedule your Gears and intentionally shifting well between them allows you to bring your best to each relationship and role in your life. Use this tool and teach it to your family and co-workers so you have a language to communicate your needs and expectations objectively.
