About this Event
Girls on Hills Ltd is the exclusive and recommended recce provider for Skyline Scotland. We are delighted to offer this one-off official guided recce of the new Salomon Buttermere Skyline™, which is replacing the Ring of Steall Skyrace for 2024 as the final of the Golden Trails National Series UK and Netherlands.
The new Salomon Buttermere Skyline™ is inspired by the pure challenge of tackling the iconic skyline of this favourite Lake District destination. The route is a classic mountain loop of the Buttermere fells, taking in the famous Red Pike, High Stile, Hay Stacks, Dale Head, and Robinson summits, linking technical trails and magical Lakeland views.
The recce day is open to both men and women, and will be led by our local, qualified mountain leader and running guide, Heather Ohly. You can be assured of a safe, high quality experience with someone who is extremely knowledgeable about the event and the race route. Your guided recce will be a maximum group ratio of 1:6.
You do not need a race entry to participate but you do need an appropriate (high level) of hill fitness to complete the day.
The guided day will allow you to recce all sections of the race route and size-up the magnitude of the undertaking to inform race-day pacing and strategy.
The route taken on this recce will not be identical to race day but will still cover the whole course. We will meet at Honister Pass, race checkpoint 5 (parking and refreshments available). From here we will start our recce with the stiff climb up Dale Head to checkpoint 6. From here we will traverse the route anti-clockwise as per race-day to checkpoint 8 (Buttermere Village). We may stop here for a brief break/drink at the village, where it is possible to retire if neccessary - but please note that you will be responsible for your own return to Honsiter/onward travel.
The second half of the day will be spent running from Buttermere Village over the southern skyline, finishing with the undulating run down from Haystacks back to Honsiter Pass.

PLEASE NOTE:
The recce is not a race; the intention is to travel at a speed which is comfortable for the group, with time allowed for chatting with each other and the guide. Your expectation should be brisk uphill walking, jogging on the flats and downhill running. You’ll need to come prepared for a big day in the hills with your own clothing, equipment and food.
The group leader may change the route, should poor conditions or group fitness dictate.
Accommodation and food is not included. A minimum of 3 persons are required for this event to go ahead. In the event that not enough persons join the recce, then all bookings will be cancelled and refunded in full as soon as possible.
