Meet five authors rooted in this region: Poets Guy Reed (Time Under The Overlook), Richard Parisio (Trailside Register), and Will Nixon (If Not in Heaven, Then in Saugerties) will read from their recent collections, followed by conversations with cartoonist Michael Esposito, (Swami Salami: The Best of the Beloved Woodstock Times Cartoons) and former Woodstock Times editor Brian Hollander (Nothing of Insignificance: Adventures in Journalism.) Be prepared to smile, sigh, and learn something new about the Catskills and Hudson Valley.
Bushwhack Books started in 2009 with Walking Woodstock: Journeys into the Wild Heart of America's Most Famous Small Town by Michael Perkins and Will Nixon. It became the #1 paperback bestseller of the year at the Golden Notebook and remains popular to this day. The Pocket Guide to Woodstock soon followed. After Michael Perkins passed in 2022, the press expanded to publish local authors celebrated at this event.
Guy Reed is the author of Time Under The Overlook, a poetry collection inspired by living at the base of Overlook Mountain for twenty-seven years. Originally from Minnesota and drawn to the West as a young man, he was surprised to realize one day that what started as a transitional move to Saugerties had become the better part of his life. His previous poetry books include Second Innocence, The Effort to Hold Light, and Until the Words Come co-authored with Cheryl Rice. With Katie Cokinos he co-directed, Water Keeps Time, a documentary about the Esopus Creek.
Richard Parisio is the author of Trailside Register, a collection of poems that finds inspiration in nature close at hand. A retired DEC naturalist, he worked in the Catskills and Hudson Valley for twenty-five years. Before that, he got his buggy start in the Everglades. He wrote a nature column for the New Paltz Times. His previous chapbook, The Owl Invites Your Silence, won the Slapering Hol Press award from the Hudson Valley Writers Center.
Michael Esposito contributed Swami Salami cartoons to Woodstock Times for nearly 40 years. Swami Salami: The Best of the Beloved Woodstock Times Cartoons appeared in autumn 2024. He moved to Woodstock in 1967 fresh from success with the Blues McGoos, a band that had a top hit with "(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet." He remains a musician to this day, playing with Marc Black. For a decade as a monk he attended to the Woodstock hippie priest Father Francis. For the past 40 years, he has run the Old Spokes Home bike shop.
Brian Hollander, former editor of Woodstock Times, is the author of Nothing of Insignificance: Adven-tures in Journalism, which presents 40 of his favorite pieces from 30 years of local coverage. Before journalism (The Daily Freeman followed by 19 years at Woodstock Times), he was a founding DJ at WDST and the Woodstock Town Supervisor for two terms. He has been a popular musician since he moved to Woodstock in the early 1970s.
Will Nixon, the publisher of Bushwhack Books, is the author of If Not in Heaven, Then in Saugerties, a town portrait in poems. It's a sequel of sorts to Acrostic Woodstock. His other poetry collections include My Late Mother as a Ruffed Grouse and Love in the City of Grudges.
