About this Event

Busboys and Poets Books presents WHEN MY COUSINS COME TO TOWN Story Time with Angela Shanté!

Join us for our first story time of 2021 to gather around on the reading carpet and hear Angela read her latest release WHEN MY COUSINS COME TO TOWN (released May 4th, 2021 - $17.99 retail). WHEN MY COUSINS COME TO TOWN is a gorgeous picture book about a young girl who is excitedly waiting for her cousins to come visit her for their summer vacation! She’s so excited, but can’t help but be worried that she hasn’t quite earned a nickname for herself yet. Jermaine is Stone for his strength, and Natasha is Giggles for her jokes and humor- what will she be?

This event is free and open to all through RSVP on our Eventbrite page- there is limited space to observe COVID-19 social distancing in our event room at Busboys and Poets of Takoma. This event will be livestreamed, so if you can’t make it or are still playing it safe feel free to tune in with you and your little one for a great hour or story telling and fun.

RSVP to guarantee a seat or livestream link for this in-person event at Busboys and Poets Takoma!

The program will start out with an introduction from our Director of Operations, Lori Barrientos Sanchez, before we get right to it with story time with the author herself, Angela Shante. There will be time for Q&A at the end for those joining us in person as well as online through StreamYard. Table service will be provided for both food and drink with brunch and dinner options available.

About WHEN MY COUSINS COME TO TOWN: Fitting in can be hard, but standing out isn’t easy either! Every summer, a young girl eagerly waits for her cousins to come visit and celebrate her birthday. All her cousins are unique in their own ways and have earned cool nicknames for themselves… except for the girl. But this year things are going to be different! This year, before the summer ends, she’s determined to earn her own nickname. Filled with warmth, love, and laughter, WHEN MY COUSINS COME TO TOWN brings all the energy and love of a big family to prove that you don’t need to be anyone else to be special- just the way you are is exactly right!

A fun, lively story of Black family and cousin culture that celebrates individuality and embraces differences- WHEN MY COUSINS COME TO TOWN is a picture book that combines everyday storytelling with cultural pride and love.
