About this Event
With Halloween in the rear-view mirror and who-knows-what-will-happen on the schedule for next week, take a cheerful sanity break and join us at Chain Bridge Cellars this weekend to sample some great wines and, perhaps, start thinking about Thanksgiving wines a bit. The tastings feature two white Burgundy Chardonnays from Christophe Thibert, two rich red Burgundy Pinot Noirs from Seguin, and one very impressive super-value southern Rhone red. Join us from 3-7pm Friday and noon-4pm Saturday to sample:
Dom Thibert Saint Veran 2021 – Winning Burghound’s “Outstanding Top Value” for the vintage, this is the perfect blend of richness and freshness with a touch of wood to amplify, not hide, the great Chardonnay flavors.
Domaine Thibert Pouilly Fuisse Heritage 2021 – Cranks up the intensity vs the Saint Veran and the minerality, too. But this bottling from 70 year-old vines still delivers plenty of wide open flavors and finishes with freshness and verve.
Gerard Seguin Bourgogne Cuvee Gerard 2022 – From several vineyards just outside Gevrey-Chambertin, this is bursting with 2022’s rich fruit balanced by classic Burgundian structure and minerality. Delicious young Pinot Noir.
Gerard Seguin Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2022 – From 70+ year-old vines, this is loaded with classic Gevrey character – iron ore, underbrush, damp earth – under the rich, drink me now, fruit. A high-end Thanksgiving selection perhaps?
Dom Grand Veneur Cotes du Rhone Champauvins 2021 – Robert Parker used to call this “baby Chateauneuf du Pape” both for its location just outside the appellation and the big, gusty, flavors it delivers. A terrific value, too.
I have no idea how it will work with the wines, but the cheese Jose has chosen to feature this week will surely be a hit on your autumn table, especially on Thanksgiving. If (like me) you’re a fan of the Wallace and Gromit cartoons, you’ve heard of the pair’s favorite cheese: Wensleydale. It was created by French Cistercian monks from Roquefort who settled near York, England, in the 1500s. The version we’re featuring is young – just 3 months old – and layered with tangy cranberries. The yin-yang of sweet cheese and tart fruit is addictive. And would make a perfect ending to a turkey day feast!
I’m thinking the Champauvins will be the closest thing to a match on the tasting table, although the Seguin Bourgogne has a shot. Come by Friday from 3-7 and Saturday from noon-4pm, try the cheese and wines, and let us know what you think!
