We are honored to host a special Bulgarian folk dance workshop featuring three exceptional guest instructors, each bringing their unique expertise and passion for Bulgarian dance and culture.Prof. Gergana Panova-Tekath, D.Sc.
Gergana is a highly accomplished choreographer and scholar in Bulgarian folk dance. A graduate of Sofia's National School of Dance and Choreography and Plovdiv's Academy of Music, Dance, and Fine Arts, she began her career as a soloist with the renowned Philip Kutev National Ensemble. Her academic journey spans multiple fields, including ethnomusicology, philosophy, and intercultural pedagogy, with a PhD earned summa cum laude in Germany. For more than 30 years she has presented the study of folk dances at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, worked with actors, children, professionals and amateurs, and has conducted nearly 500 seminars at universities and non-profit organizations around the world. She has published two books and many articles and introduced international dance and ethnochoreology to the elite Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, where she currently lives.
Dilyana Kurdova
Dilyana is a researcher of Bulgarian traditional dance folklore and a member of several study groups at the International Council for Traditions in Music and Dance, an NGO in formal consultative relations with UNESCO. She is also the founder of the Phoenix Perpeticum Foundation which collects, archives and publishes old video and music material from Bulgaria and the Balkans. In 2023 she published her first book on the topic of symbolism in Bulgarian traditional female costumes which has sold more than 2000 copies in a year. With more than 290 dance workshops in different countries since 2013, she is a frequent lecturer in Bulgaria and abroad on the topics of recreational folk groups, intangible cultural heritage and traditional Bulgarian dance folklore.
Daniela Nyberg
Daniela's journey in Bulgarian music, dance, arts, and poetry began in her early years. Her dedication led her to study and teach various disciplines, including choreography, Bulgarian philology, philosophy, and culturology, culminating in a PhD in Ethnochoreology from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Since 2008, Daniela has lived in the USA, leading numerous artistic and cultural programs within Seattle's Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center. On the academic side, she presents at scholarly gatherings worldwide, writes books and articles. She serves as the secretary of the Dance and Diaspora and co-secretary of the Ethnochoreology Matters Sub-Study Groups within the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance Study Group on Ethnochoreology.
This workshop is suitable for all levels, from beginners to experienced dancers.
