Tested by fire and tempered through challenges, Building Twentyone is forging its next chapter in providing students across mid-Michigan a safe space to learn, grow and connect as it
hosts a community celebration of the grand opening of its new facility at 1288 N. Cedar Road in Mason.
Building Twentyone has been serving teens in sixth through 12th grade since 2011 through after-school programming and monthly events, including “Friday Night Live,” designed to promote skill development, personal growth and positive social interactions. After its original building burned down in 2018 during renovations, Building Twentyone has been operating out of a temporary location. Their new facility will now serve more families through their Ninja Gym, private parties, rentals and more.
The grand opening event will give attendees a chance to explore the extensive amenities of the new Building
Twentyone location, which include:
• Custom-built ninja gym.
• Dedicated program rooms.
• Game zone.
• Craft nook.
• Snack café.
“On the seventh anniversary of the fire that consumed and destroyed our old building, we invite you to celebrate what God has done so we can serve not only teens, but entire families, impacting multiple generations,” said Benjamin Schartow, executive director of Building Twentyone. “After many setbacks and barriers, we’re thankful to so many people who helped get us across the finish line to build literal beauty from ashes. We hope to be the most trusted and transformative space for youth in mid Michigan — where students not only belong, but lead, thrive and shape the future of their communities.”
Current Building Twentyone students expressed their excitement for the new location:
• “I love the new place so much better. I can’t wait to use the ninja gym.”
• “So much better than the other place, it doesn’t feel like a warehouse. It feels exactly the way it way it’s supposed to feel.”

Founded in 2011, Building Twentyone has been serving students in sixth through 12th grade in the Greater Lansing area, providing a unique youth-driven center focused on building trust, hope, character, influence and potential in students before the age of 21.
