About this Event
Back in the late 1980s there was a call for national consistency in consenting and standards. The country was stifled with over regulation, 122 borough, city, and district councils all with their own bylaws and senior engineers and building inspectors who would interpret the model building bylaws in a very localised way. The reforms to local government at that time and the 1991 Building Act and the 1992 NZ Building Code promised to deliver on the outcome of consistency and innovation. And as they say the rest is history… In the decades since we have seen more inconsistency and confusion than ever and total frustration on all sides.
Interpretations are skewed by joint and several risk and liability mitigations rather than the objective of better buildings. Almost like back to the future we are seeing a call for national consistency amongst the regulators and administrators of both consenting, fire, contracting and health and safety legislation. Surely, in a small country like ours we should be able to achieve this.
We must start this journey somewhere…
Building Networks and Objective Build have partnered to host a national forum where we can showcase the work going on behind the scenes to achieve the unity we are looking for and make inroads to the change that is needed. So, we cordially invite you to join the conversation and join us on the waka for change.
