Angela Shaw and Mario Pissarra present their findings on organisational sustainability from the perspectives of KZNSA Gallery and ASAI (Africa South Art Initiative), with a discussion facilitated by Russel Hlongwane. This panel reflects on the observations and insights of two established arts organisations, whose experiences navigating the shifting economic and cultural landscape offer valuable lessons for the present moment.This discussion forms part of the Art Resource Centre Events Program’s broader inquiry into the conditions necessary for arts organisations and artists to not only endure, but to thrive. It also marks the beginning of our 20-year celebration of ASAI , an opportunity to reflect on our journey as an organisation committed to critical engagement within the visual arts and responsive programming.
Angela Shaw will present her Masters dissertation titled, Sustainability of the KwaZulu-Natal creative sector: The KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts as a case study. Shaw looks at the KZNSA using systems theory and speaks to how the membership programme holds the key to sustainability for the organisation.
While ASAI director, Mario Pissarra’s presentation reflects on the means through which ASAI has sustained itself as an organisation since its original inception as a website in 2005.
