Building Learner Independence: Learner-Owned Strategies, Self-Study, and Teacher Research
Hybrid Professional Learning Event
Join Virginia CEC for a collaborative, hybrid professional learning session focused on strengthening learner independence through intentional instructional practices.
This session centers on High-Leverage Practice 14: Cognitive and Metacognitive Strategies. Participants will explore how special education professionals can enhance instructional decision-making and promote student ownership of learning through self-study and teacher-as-researcher approaches.
Educators will engage with:
- Research-informed strategies
- Practical classroom examples
- Reflective tools that support cognitive and metacognitive development
- Approaches that empower students to take increasing responsibility for their learning
Registration Information
- This professional learning activity is FREE
- Registration is REQUIRED for all participants (in-person and virtual)
In-Person Participation
- In-person participants must present a state-issued ID for building entry and check-in.
- Registration will close on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, to allow a final participant list to be provided to Truist Security.
- Participants may bring their own lunch.
- Light refreshments will be provided by Virginia CEC.
- Lunch will be available via a group order from Roots Natural Kitchen (salads and grain bowls).
- Optional lunch registration fee: $20.00
- Lunch orders must be selected during registration.
Virtual Participation
- Virtual participants are required to register.
- Zoom meeting details will be emailed to registered participants prior to the event.
