An interactive and inspiring leadership workshop with a national expert on 'led by and for' domestic and sexual abuse service provision
About this Event

Are you a practitioner from a racially and culturally diverse background supporting domestic and sexual abuse victims-survivors in the East of England? If so, join us to develop your knowledge and skills around building a specialist 'led by and for' service for victims-survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.

Welcome to a series of leadership workshops curated by Dr Mirna Guha, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Anglia Ruskin University and Dr Katherine Allen, Senior Research Fellow, Institute for Social Justice and Crime, University of Suffolk, and delivered by national experts on Violence Against Women and Girls (with a focus on domestic and sexual abuse) policy, practice and research. This training programme is provided through research co-led by Dr Guha and Dr Allen titled "‘Nothing about us without us’: Investigating the impact of the leadership of ethnic minority women on domestic abuse service provision in East England" funded by the VISION (Violence, Health, Society) Consortium and the UKPRP through a MRC Research Council Grant Ref: MR/V049879/1.

In this informative and interactive day-long in-person workshop at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, you will meet and learn from the inspirational leadership journey of Zlakha Ahmed, MBE, founder and CEO of Apna Haq, a ‘led by and for’ organisation which supports Black and minority ethnic women and girls in Rotherham, South Yorkshire who are experiencing any form of violence. Zlakha has over 37 years of experience developing and overseeing violence against women support services at a local level, while influencing strategy, policy and procedure at a regional, national, European and global level. As an anti-racist feminist woman from a black and minoritized community, Zlakha brings lived experience to her work. In recognition of her services to women’s rights and community cohesion, Zlakha was awarded an MBE in 2016. She has actively contributed to the development of NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) committee Domestic Violence UK standards in 2013 and has served as a board member for the European Network Against Racism since 2018, as well as National Women’s Aid, WeRise (Muslim Women’s empowerment initiative), and Women of South Yorkshire.

What you can expect from this workshop:

-Insight and learning into Zlakha’s leadership journey

-Reflecting on your own experiences/skills and local context

-Tailoring insights from Zlakha’s experience towards your personal and professional growth

-Building knowledge, confidence, self-awareness, identification of current skills and mapping future aspirations

-Being inspired to collectively foster the growth of a regional ‘led by and for’ service for victims-survivors of domestic and sexual abuse

The workshop will also include personalised mentorship sessions with Zlakha Ahmed to cover:

How does the above apply to me ?

What am I most enthused and passionate about from the themes discussed today? How can I bring this into my existing work?

What learning processes and SMART objectives can I put into place to enable me to strengthen or start my leadership journey within domestic and sexual abuse service provision?
